Fishing has been practised off the coast of Ii since at least the Middle Ages. Fishing is still an important source of food and a hobby for a large number of people here, for others it is a profession. You can try traditional winter net fishing with a professional fisherman. At the beginning of the trip, we will open holes on the ice and prepare to check the nets.
Together we check one or two sets of nets, catching perch and pike depending on the season, plenty of burbots in mid-winter, sometimes whitefish. On this trip, you'll get to do a lot of the work yourself: you'll hold on to the net and feel the fish pulling in the nets, you'll untangle the catch and handle it correctly. Seagulls and sea eagles are sure to try to get their share of the catch, and which animal's tracks will lead to the next net opening?
We will make a fire in the fire pit for warming up, you can also fry up some picnic sausages if you wish.
On this trip you will experience first-hand the winter in the North Sea region: the weather often changes dramatically even during the day. There may be a lot of snow on the ice, or none at all, and temperatures vary. Always dress warmly enough. Depending on the time of year, you may be able to catch a glimpse of the sun peeking over the horizon and a spectacular sunset, or in spring you may be fishing in warming sunshine.
